I don't like to shop!

Like the title reads, I don't like to shop.  That's how I feel after this weekend anyhow.  It's honestly not that I don't like shopping, I do.  It's that shopping for clothes really frustrates me to no end!

I'm a plus size gal.  I'm not ashamed of that, nor am I trying to hide that fact.  What you see is pretty much what you get with me.  I've never been a size 2.  When I graduated high school, I was a size 12.  As it stands right now, I'm a size 18.  Could I lose some weight?  You bet!

Here's why I no longer like to shop for clothes.  Everything in the plus size departments I've visited either looks like it's made for a teenager OR a grandma.  I'm 34 years old.  I have pretty classic tastes and have never been super trendy.  Sure, I was at one point, but that was pre-kids and when I worked in the general public eye.  These days I want something that can carry me through more than just a season.  This is where the problem lies.

I went shopping for jeans on Saturday.  You know, classic jeans that sit just below the waist and don't have anything super snazzy on them.  Oh my goodness, it was nuts!  At one store I put on an 18 and it almost fell off of me.  Add to that the jeans were more than $50 and well, you get the point.  At the next store they didn't even have any jeans out!  Only capris and shorts in this store.  The next store looked like I was walking into high school h-e-double hockey sticks and I slowly backed away.  Why is it so hard to find a nice pair of jeans and some cute, plain, non-mumu tees?  I mean, does everything in the plus size department have to just hang off of my boobs and have no shape?  It is necessary for jeans to look like a bedazzler puked on them?  Seriously, can't someone just design nice clothes?

I did find a cute pair of cargo khaki pants that can roll up to become peddle pushers and I snatched them up quickly!  Shirts I was at a loss for.  Oh, they had tees but nothing that didn't just hang.  I have curves yet I also have that "I had 3 kids in 3 years and my belly is stretched out" pooch that I can't seem to make disappear.  Trust me, I've tried!  If you know of a way, please share!

Now that I've complained about why I didn't like shopping, let me tell you a little about my style.  Honestly, it's very simple.  I'm through and through a jeans and tee shirt girl.  Oh, I'm like any other girl and love to dress up and get pretty for special occasions or nights out.  Typically though, you'll find me in jeans when it's cool and capris when it's warm (I have this thing about knees and how ugly they are, don't ask).  I also was raised to buy clothes that fit.  You know what I'm talking about.  Nothing that gives you a muffin top or is skin tight.

I don't know, I've just had this gripe for quite a while now and I realize it's pointless to whine.  Like I said before, I'm 34.  I do not want to look like Dorothy from the Golden Girls with shoulder pads and flowy everything.  Yet, I don't think attempting to make a woman my age look like she's still 21 is a good thing either.  If you can pull that look off, more power to you, I just prefer to look like a Mom.  Yet, I don't want to look like a Stepford Wife.  I'm not sure exactly where to end this rant, so I guess all I can do ask the people who design plus sized clothes to realize that not everyone wants to be trendy or look like a grandma.  There are those who still love classic lines, classic Americana, and simple sometimes is good.

  2. OMGoodness it's as if I wrote this! I'm 35, an 18 (sometimes 20 depending on the brand) on bottom, and a solid 2X on top because of my "girls". I have been frustrated for soooo long. I've even said I'm going to design my own line one day because it's so bad. My favorite jeans are from Lane Bryant. They have those special sizing categories according to your shape. Lately I've been shopping Old Navy online (they have plus sizes online but not in the store). They have free shipping over $50 and free returns by mail. I've been pretty happy with their tops. They have a lot that don't seem to be realistic for plus size girls, but some are cute. I haven't tried their bottoms yet. Land's End also sells tees that have some shape to them. I feel your pain!
